Viking Age Civilians?

Medieval

My major purchase at Historicon was thirteen bags of Gripping Beast Vikings and Irish, purchased from the 19th Century Miniatures group, a.k.a. Old Glory 15s. To go with them, however, I'd also like to have a couple of dozen unarmed civilians, including women and children so the Vikings have something to pillage. Does anyone know of a manufacturer of such? Leave a message by clicking on the comments link below, or send an email to the editor. Thanks.

  • Err, yes ... Gripping Beast!  They do several civilian sets, including children and even priests.  They also have a “booty” set (that’s swag, not females!), and laden carts and ponies to carry it of with.

  • That’s funny. I asked the US distributor if GB made such figures and was told “no”. Maybe they are available only in England.

  • I can confirm what Christopher says - there was a GB ad in Wargames Illustrated a couple of issues back for said Civilians, etc.

  • Do not forget Old Glory.  They have Viking civilians.  I am not sure if they are listed in the Old Glory Viking range, or SVS codes.  In the West Line for Dwarf Wars, they have also added civilians to the Nordvolk line.  They were a new release at Historicon.

  • Just remember that while the Vikings were quite keen on inter-Scandinavian raiding, civilians in Saxon, Irish or Frankish lands looked quite different.  Hence, their civilians are only strictly usable in a Scandinavian (or maybe Scottish/Dublin) context.  Old Glory do make some captives in their “looters” pack, and pretty much any priest figures can be used (GB,Foundry,Essex)Medieval civilians (OG, Foundry, Essex) really don’t work, because the clothes are totally wrong.

  • Black Tree also does Viking and generically European civilians (some of which are maybe a little too medieval, but most of which are Anglo-Saxon). But I’ll back up GB: they do a rather nice pack of women and children for Vikings.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
