Plastic Models In Wargaming
Over the weekend, I attended SpartaCon in Lansing, Michigan. It’s a small, but well-run convention with some very good wargames presentations.
One of the things that impressed me at this convention was the number of games that were being run with plastic soldiers. There was an excellent Vikings versus Moors game run by my friend Brad Northrop, using 54mm plastics. Several others were running Napoleonics games using 1/72, or HO scale plastic soldiers. A World War II naval game featured 1/700 scale plastic ships; 1/35 scale plastic figures were used in a modern skirmish; a 20mm Vietnam game set in Hue (?) had a table full of HO scale plastic city buildings (and a resin pagoda from an aquarium store.)
I’d always avoided soft plastic figures because I found that the paint chipped off with even minimal handling. However, Brad told me that you can avoid this by: 1) washing the figures thoroughly before priming 2) using enamel paints and 3) giving the figures several thick coats of acrylic floor wax. It seems to work.
Now I’m going to have to go back and take another look at those figures from HaT, Airfix and others.
