Miniature Wargaming Topsites Project

Site News

Do you have a miniature wargaming hobby site? Then join the MiniatureWargaming Topsites Project. It's an interactive, constantly updating directory of miniature wargaming websites.

While surfing for some Pokemon stuff for my son the other day, I ran across something called the Pokemon Topsites. It was a page that had a list of Pokemon fan sites, each identified with a banner that led to the site. What made it more than a list of links, however, was that the page changes daily to reflect the number of hits that each site receives. The site that received the most hits was listed at the top, the next most was below, and so on. There were even buttons to view further statistics on the sites, and a place to write a review of the site. I clicked on the first page or so of site listings to find what I wanted.

All the while, I was thinking about what a a great way it was to publicize hobby sites. So I decided to start my own Miniature Wargaming Topsites project. The project is located at: http://www.miniaturewargaming.com/topsites

If you’ve got a hobby site that focuses on Miniature Wargaming, all you have to do is go to the site and click on the “join” button on the left. There is no charge; and there never will be. After registering, the program will give you a snippet of HTML to put in an inconspicuous place on your website. You can add a banner if it’s no larger than 270 x 30.

Once the HTML is in place, each time you get a click, it will ping the Topsite and let it know. The hits will be logged, and at the end of the week, the sites on the list will be rearranged accordingly. No other information will be transmitted, and I certainly won’t use your information for anything without your explicit permission. I’m absolutely not going to sell the list to anyone. The only reason it wants your email is to keep you informed about Topsites events.

The Miniature Wargaming Topsites Project should help us publicize our sites. It even allows people to leave comments and reviews. When the word gets out, visitors will be able to see dozens of sites. Plus, because of the links going out to your site, it should improve your Google ranking.

The thing is in the experimental phase right now, because I’m not sure it’s all working. If you try it, and something doesn’t work, please let me know.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
