Magic Wash

Painting

Here's a recipe for Magic Wash, the all-purpose, superior figure wash made with Future Floor polish. All you have to do is mix this with a little paint in a shade deeper than the base coat, and let it flow into the crevasses of the miniature. It's an especially effective technique when painting a large number of historical miniatures because things go so quickly.

  • Yeah, I use it too. Results are good enough.

  • I have used the Kleer and water mix for some time - my favourite is 1 part Kleer to 3 parts distilled water.  I mix up a small bottle and then use it for mixing with ink or for a deeper colour acrylic paint.

    A bottle of Kleer will last a ‘life time’.

    One firther use for Kleer;
    I often paint up soft plastic figures and after washing in soapy water I use PVA glue as an undercoat.  Once painted I varnish the figure with Kleer (a 1 - 3 mix or even stronger) then acrylic matte medium.  So far no issues with paint flaking.

  • Magic Wash even gives a hard protective coating !! It’s not too shiny, but a final coat of dullcote often makes the figures look better to my eye.

  • I use Klear (UK) and have a plastic bottle mixed up with 3 to 1 water to Klear, plus a bottle of 100% Klear.  I would also recommend that you use distilled water - no history, just mixing with distilled is guaranteed to be clear.  One other point I also used a flow enhancer.

    Use either inks or acrylic paints for the colour/hue.

    Thanks

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
