Fistfull of Tows rules

Rules Modern

Ty Beard's "Fistful of TOWS" is one of the first free wargames rules I saw on the net. It's now out in a commercial version, but you can still download a freeware version in pdf format. Ty writes: A Fistful of TOWs 2 is a fast-playing, hard-hitting set of miniatures rules covering modern warfare. The rules are comprehensive, yet playable. And fast. Real fast. A typical game turn should average no more than 10-15 minutes. Say goodbye to those excruciating hour-long turns and games that don't end. With FFT2, you can often play a game quicker than you can set it up. We played a game with eight players that simulated two complete Soviet divisions smashing into an entire US Armored Cavalry Regiment. It took 3 hours! Tired of leafing through rulebooks and endless charts? With FFT, all vehicle, infantry and artillery data are on one line. Tired of non-intuitive game systems? Tired of slow, tedious, math exercises that are about as exciting as watching paint dry (oil-based paint...)? Tired of games that are so chart heavy and numbers heavy that you need a PhD in Finite Mathematics to understand them? Tired of...well, you get the point. GAME FEATURES Troop Quality. Troop quality affects every system in the game. Just like in The Real World. Elegant Artillery Rules. No pre-plotting! And players actually use artillery in FFT2. Great Command Rules. Clean and simple, the command system accurately models modern command and control, without a bunch of leader stands cluttering up the playing surface. Virtually Every Major Weapons System is covered, along with data for different time periods. Weapons Systems Include: • Missiles • Tanks, Light Vehicles and IFVs from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, North Korea, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia/Soviet Union/CIS, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and Venezuela. • Infantry • Helicopters • AA Guns, SAMs and Manportable SAMs and much, much more.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
