Black Tree Design Dwarf Slayers Review
Fantasy, Figures
(click on any of the pictures to see a larger version)There’s a lot to like about Black Tree Designs’ newest release, “The Dwarf Slayers of Dragon’s Peak.” From a painter’s point of view, I found the figures a delight to work with. There was virtually no flash on the figures, and only minimal mold lines—a couple of swipes with an exacto blade, and they were ready to go. The sculpting also worked to make them very easy to paint. All of the areas were very clearly defined (there is nothing I hate more than having to stare at a figure for fifteen minutes trying to figure out what’s what.) I finished the sample figure above in about fifteen minutes. If you were painting a regiment for gaming purposes, you could do a lot of these in a relatively short period of time.
Style and sculpting are such a matter of taste that I’ll just let the pictures do the talking. I like them, but they are surely not for everyone. They are very much in line with the Games Workshop school of design. I only took the time to paint up the one figure, but the others in the pack that were sent for review are in the picture below. I think they’re all very interesting with a nice cave-man-like look. Lots of large dragon and giant bones and skulls and such.
As for size, they are “heroic scale”. The picture below compares the painted dwarf to a Gripping Beast Viking, and an Old Glory Medieval Peasant. I didn’t have any of the new Games Workshop figures (mine are all 20 years old), but I think that it would fit in well with the largish new fantay figures, such as GW or Reaper. The topknot makes the painted figure deceptively taller, but you can compare the line of the eyes to see the true size.

There are some pretty nice slayers from Black tree Design. I found a review on them somewhere which said they have excellent detail, no flash and very little in the way of mould lines; so they sound pretty decent.
