1848 Hungarian War of Independence Computer Game

Software

1848 is a good looking and FREE! computer game. From the publisher’s page:

1848 is a turn based computer strategy game, set during the violent era of the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-49. 1848 was a year of revolutions. Most of the uprisings were crushed quickly, but Hungary was an exception. While Austria was occupied in dealing with the independence movements in Italy, Hungary used the time to train and deploy a competent army.. The newly created Honved Army suffered some set-backs in 1848, but in the 1849 spring counter-attack, the whole country was liberated. Victory was sweet but short for Hungary—in the summer of 1849 the Tsar of Russia intervened with 200,000 troops. In history, this force could not be stopped. Can you change history?

1848 is a turn based operational strategy game for the PC. The game plays out on a large hexagonal map. You are responsible for all your forces and must decide what do with each of them. Attack, retreat, recon, defend, fortify, siege an enemy fort or build a new army the choice is up to you.

1848 has a simple, intuitive interface. There are no counters in the game, only large animated figures. More than a dozen unit types are included, organized into batteries and regiments. The tutorial campaign will teach you all the things you need to be successful in the game. When you feel ready, you can fight against Austria for Hungary’s independence or crush the Hungarian rebellion with the Habsburg army in 6 campaigns. All campaigns start with a well-researched setup, giving you an authentic historical starting point. When you have mastered the AI, play against a human opponent via E-mail, Hotseat play or across a TCP/IP Network (LAN and Internet).

Kriegspiel Computer Game

Software

Kriegspiel is the name given by a French designer to his game looks like sort a sort of a cross between Chess and an Avalon Hill style wargame. It was mass produced in 1987, and now is out in a computerized version. There’s no AI, though, so you’ll have to find an opponent. It looks interesting. There are both Mac and Windows versions.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
