Effects of the Dip Photos

Painting

Dipping figures in a polyurethane stain is one of the best ways to speed your figure painting. In this case, the author blocked out the colors on the figures and then dipped in Army Painter Quick Shade. You can get the same effect with furniture stain, or by diluting some color with a water and Future Floor polish mix.

Ancient Empires Free Wargames Miniatures Rules

Rules Ancients

Previously a commercially published set of wargames rules, Ancient Empires now is available in a new edition as a free download.

From the Yahoo Site:

Originally published in 1990, significant changes have been made in almost every aspect of Ancient Empires. Popular basing for figures is now utilized, and the game now includes a point system and a conversion matrix for those familiar with the ‘DBM’ style of gaming.

If you have tired of the traditional “beer and pretzels” ancient games so common in the market place and you want more, take a look at Ancient Empires 2nd edition. With Ancient Empires 2nd edition you can get together for a small two to three hour battle using one of multiple figure scale options.

Red Arrow 6mm Fantasy Rules

Rules Fantasy

Red Arrow is a set of free fantasy miniatures rules for 6mm figures. The author writes:

These rules are a reaction to the well known (main stream) table top battle rules which currently saturate the Tolkien wargaming market. I simply don`t get along with that `other` set of rules, or it`s equally as expensive myriad of supplement manuals; so I have created this simple alternative as a (free) counterpoint to the other somewhat unwieldy monstrosity. “The Red Arrow” is a rules system which closely follows Jim Wallman`s “Follow Me, Men” and my
own 6mm generic fantasy rules “Fire At Will, Men.” These 6mm One Brainer Lord of the Rings rules are my personal extrapolated contribution to the original work(s).

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
