Two Hour Wargames offers an introductory scenario called “Dog Soldiers.” The scenario is designed to teach you the Chain Reaction miniature wargaming system as though you were at a convention. It’s based on the horror movie of the same name.
The Sword In the 20th Century is the Jackson Gamers’ variant of Larry Brom’s versatile Sword and the Flame colonials rules. The authors write:
This is an adaptation of TSATF to cover the various skirmishes and small wars of the 20th cen. up through the 1930’s. Most forces are armed with bolt action rifles with smokeles powder. Native forces may still be armed with black powder single shot breech loaders and even muzzle loaders. The fierce native charge may still occur, but machine guns rule the battlefield, and light automatic weapons and grenades are making their appearance. I would hope these rules could be used for various skirmishes such as East Africa WWI, RCW, NWF 1919-1938, SCW, China between the wars and the Banana wars to name a few.
Peter Pig’s AK 47 Republic rules are a lot of fun as a campaign game. Set in the turbulent near once and future Africa, there are rules for designing an army, political maneuvering, morale, adn more. Its your chance to run your own little despotic African nation.
But I’ve always thought that the combat rules were a little lacking. Or maybe its just better tos ay that they just aren’t to my style.
Crushing is a set of free wargames rules designed to allow players to create battles between gangs driving armed automobiles. The rules have a seriously 1970s look and feel, with fat fonts in the headlines, and drawings of hip cats with serious ‘fros. The rules are available in both French and English, and are very well done. The only little quibble I have is that in the English version, some of the background material still is in French.
Another in a body of work by wargamer Mike Adams, Tour of Duty is a set of free wargames rules for the Vietnam War. It’s based on Charles Grant’s Battle! rules for World War II.
Deep Fried Happy Mice offers Medals of Valor, a set of free miniatures wargames rules for modern firefights.
Extra Crispy writes:
Medals of Valor is our system for recreating skirmish and tactical combat during the 20th
Century. These are low intensity rules designed for fast play and fun. We have tried to maintain
a feel for realism while understanding that a comprehensive detailed system would be very slow
and cumbersome.
21st Century Skirmish is a set of free wargames rules for platoon level skirmishes. The game is designed to be used with either 28mm models (1:48) or 15mm models (1:72).
Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.
The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.
Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
