Blood On The Sand is a game of fantasy gladiatorial combat, but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t also use it for other arenas. The game uses lots of six sided dice and some unusual mechanisms.
For those hobbyists who have been playing Warhammer for a decade or more, they will know that the latest Mighty Empires boxed set and plastic tiles is not the first incarnation of this campaign system.
For those with a twinge of nostalgia for the original Mighty Empires rules, or for those new Warhammer players who are curious what the old system was like, we present a downloadable PDF of the entire 64-page original Mighty Empires rulebook. Of course, this file doesn’t supplant the current rules for the new boxed set, but it might give you some clever ideas for tweaking your house rules. Enjoy!
Crunch Waffle Games offers Extra Terrae Crepusculum, a free fantasy skirmish wargame designed to allow you to use miniatures from any other game system or line. Crunch Waffle is of course, a miniatures company and surely hopes that this will spur sales. It’s a great idea. I’ve long thought that miniatures companies should give away their rules to sell the miniatures—sort of the Gillette theory of game sales: give away the handle and charge them for the blades.
Undying Lands is a set of free fantasy rules from Kataphraktoi games. The authors write:
We take the works of Tolkien and Moorcock to be actual historical accounts. In our careful reading, we found that fantasy battle is an extension of the mechanics of historical battle. In Undying lands, you get all the tactical subtleties of historical wargaming, plus an array of fantasy beasts, sorcery, special attributes and their associated benefits and problems. Whether you intent is fair or foul, regardless of your Balrog bodyguard, the ordinary rank and file is the tactically most important soldier on your battlefield and that his physical constraints is on par with his historical counterpart.
Fantasy Flyers is a set of free miniatures wargames rules for aerial skirmishes. You can construct your own flyers
I think it would be a good alternate game if you own some of those old Man O’War flyers—the Dwarf Gyrocopter, Manticore Riders, Wyvern Riders, etc. You also could use 15mm flyers (although I can’t recall if I’ve ever seen a good variety of those), or possibly 25mm fantasy figures (but I think the distances may have to be modified for this).
Hell Dorado is a miniatures game from french publisher Asmodee Editions. As you might expect, it involves combat between various factions in Hell. You can find an English version of the rules here.
The Farland Mass Combat System is designed to help role players resolve large scale conflicts. There’s also a great—and free— program to help you do so.
Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.
The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.
Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
