March To The Sound of the Guns rules

Rules NapoleonicsWarmaster

Herbert Wong written "March to the Sound of the Guns," a Napoleonic wargame that is a variant of Games Workshop's Warmaster miniatures rules. Warmaster is a generally good set of rules that borrows heavily from Fire and Fury and some other historical sets. Of course, Games Workshop would never admit that. Heck, they don't even admit that there is a miniature wargaming hobby outside of the "Games Workshop Hobby."

Warmachine Army Builder

Science FictionWarmachine

Iron Kingdoms Warmachine is one of the best miniature wargaming ideas I've seen in years. It combines elements of fantasy, science fiction and steampunk into an entirely original background and wargame. This website has a web-based army builder for the Iron Kingdoms factions: Cryx, Cygnar, Khador and Menoth.

Starship Troopers Fort

Terrain Buildings

The movie Starship Troopers has taken a real beating from science fiction fans since its release a couple of years ago. Still, I think that the bug attack on Fort Apache was really exciting. And it offers miniature wargamers a couple of neat ideas for scenarios. Of course, to do it, you're going to need to add a science fiction fort to your terrain kit. Here are some instructions on building Starship Troopers' Fort Apache for miniature wargaming.

V-2 Rocket Model

Paper Figs Terrain

Here's an idea for a miniature wargaming scenario: During WWII, a group of US paratroopers, or British commandos are sent to destroy a V-2 rocket base. Of course, to do this, you're going to need to add a model of a V-2 rocket to your terrain. This website has a free paper model of a V-2 rocket in 1/32 scale. You could easily rescale it on your computer.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
