I’m looking to get into doing some Ancients. No one in my group has any. But there are so many choices. I don’t think I want to do Romans. I’m looking at some bronze age stuff. In your experience, what armies and opponents offer a good variety of games? I’m thinking Greeks and Persians. Trojan War Era? Or maybe Egyptians and ???. I want to do 25mm.

The Hellenistic period might be my first choice—along with your typical Greek professionals, you can (depending upon your choice of kingdom) mix in a varied lot of locals according to taste.

If you want to play earlier periods the Kushite Egyptians could be of interest.  I remember playing against one such army that included lots of (mediocre) cavalry—not something you usually see in an Egyptian army.  Nubian irregulars and remnant Pharaonic infantry and chariotry provided color and more varied army composition.

the Hellenistic period is your best bet since from 1500 BC to 300 AD so many types of armies and forces and wars were centered around the mediterranean that your choices are endless, you could build a force of greeks and this week they can battle the persians, next week minoans, the week after Ionians or dorians or even more greeks.(not many if any Egyptian/Greek wars though).

...hate to be pedant but….....those Greeks would need to substantially alter their mode of dress and eqipument to fight those opponents on consecutive weeks!

I am building an Carthagian army. and I do it with a lot of satisfaction.
You can build out your armie any direction you want, because of the so many allies and mercenaries.

My dream is to build out an armie thats at least 1 on 10 with the army of Hannibal on the battle of Cannae

Take a look of the diversity of the troops, and of course the use of War Elephants. Phalanxes all kind of Cavalrie and many many cavalrie.

I’m currently doing a batch of Caananites and Sea Peoples using Foundry figures. Then, I’m going to do Hittites and then Egyptians. Nothing too big, mostly about 100 - 120 figures per army. I think the four will make a nice round-robin bibical type arrangement.
