Treating lichen?

A while ago I collected some wild lichen in hopes of making wargame terrain with it.

However if I understand it right there is some sort of treatment required, or it needs to be dipped in glycerin. Anyone done this before?

Thanks,

Treated for what? My Mrs used to collect the stuff, when she was a lil’ girl. People use(d) it for flower arrangements and stuff. She said they just dried it out in a box with holes in, in the sun. Nothing special.

For use as wargaming terrain like bushes, it’s very brittle.

People often use lichen just scattered around on a table top for bushes and tumbleweeds but when it’s brittle you can’t really use it for that.

Can always mist the lichen, that will soften it again… unless its held on to what ever its glued to with PVA white glue… There is something that you can do to the lichen with some sort of glucose, I’ll dig around and see if I can find what it is.

Well Iv’e finally done it using glycerin, you just soak it a long while in glycerin and water but unless you get a bunch of glycerin cheap it’s not really worth it, glycerin is pretty expensive in small quantities.

Try putting a treated piece outdoors in the sun for a few days and test its survivablility? Or later follow up post on how its holding up would be great.

Well I haven’t put it in direct sunlight but having it indoors for some weeks now it hasn’t changed.

Here is the site I loosely followed, I didn’t heat it though, just let it rest in regular water for a day and a half.

I will normally place my trees that are covered with it and the stuff i spread out in plastic lock tight bags when i pull them out they are all ways soft, but if you glue it down on anything then it will dry out eventually.
