Fire and Fury America’s Wars

Rules 18th CRules 19th C

I think Fire and Fury is the finest set of miniatures rules ever written. It has elegantly simple mechanics, fun gameplay and set the standard for high-quality rules presentation.

Now the Fire and Fury people are at work on a version for America’s other “horse and musket” wars: The Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War. You can find the playtest versions of Fire and Fury: Americas Wars here.

Thoughts On Wargaming Stalingrad

World War II

Mike Adams offers some thoughts on wargaming the battle of Stalingrad. I found them very interesting and plan to use them in my next game. Stalingrad is one of my favorite battle settings for WWII 28mm skirmish wargames.

Tac Ant

Rules Fantasy

Gary Gill offers Tac Ant,

a tactical level, ant to ant combat simulation designed for use with tabletop miniatures. The game represents the constant war and struggle between genetically different ant colonies as they quest for food. You, the player, represent the supreme commander of a colony as you control every detail of their war. From the level of conflict to the types of weapons carried by each soldier. Life, death and the very existence of a entire colony rest upon your shoulders.

TAC-ANT represents small to medium sized battles usually ranging from 20 to 200 units per side. The rule structure is simple enough for fast game play but detailed enough for individual unit characterization.

It looks like it could be a lot of fun. And you wouldn’t have to invest a whole lot in the games. You can get big bags of plastic ants cheaply at a lot of discount stores.

The Forge Army List Creation Tool

Software

The Forge is an army list creation tool offered at The Digital Foundry. The author writes:

The Forge is an electronic wargaming management tool that assists in the creation of army lists for your favorite wargame(s). The point is to make this process quick and easy. I originally created The Forge so that my friends and I could create army lists without having to lookup points, etc. when we wanted to go play a game. It is important to note thought, that The Forge will not replace your gaming material, but insteads adds to it. Therefor you should have a good understanding of the rules before you start assembling an army.

The Forge relies on a data file to supply specific information on any particular wargame. These lists have been made by fellow Forge users and can be found on the internet. You can also use the tools, within The Forge, to create your own data files or edit existing ones. I would like to package tons of data files with the installation program, but

would probably kill me smile

The Forge is free and I hope to keep it that way! All that said, I hope you enjoy the program.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

For pictures, visit the gallery.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
