Wargamers Guide To Napoleonic Austria

Napoleonics

Chronofus has written a wargamers’ guide to Napoleonic Austria. He writes:

This document is a wargamer’s guide to Austria in the disastrous campaign against France in 1805, written to suit the Elan rules system. This is not intended to be an in depth detailed study of the campaign, which must be left to Europeans with good access to archival material. Enough information is presented here to give an overview of the campaign itself and enough formation and uniform details for a wargamer to suitably paint and base their miniatures to a reasonable standard. There are enough vagaries in some units for perfectionists to require further details from more in depth historical analysis. The reader is also cautioned that there has been, and continues to be, alot of misinformation about the Austrian army. Many parts of this campaign where Napoleon was not present have also been conveniently buried in history. As far as practical this document has been verified against current research.

Methuselah Vampire Hunting Game

HorrorRules Horror

Warpspawn games has a vampire hunting game called Methuselah designed to be played on a chessboard with a custom set of cards. One side plays Dracula and his minions, the other the vampire hunter and his assistants.

I think that some of the ideas could easily be lifted for use in more traditional miniatures games.

Confederate American Civil War Maps

ACW

The Library of Congress has a collection of

cartographic items made by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss (1828-1899), a topographic engineer in the Confederate Army. Hotchkiss made detailed battle maps primarily of the Shenandoah Valley, some of which were used by the Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson for their combat planning and strategy. Several of the maps have annotations of various military officers, demonstrating their importance in the military campaigns. The collection also includes maps made or used by Hotchkiss during his post-war years, including maps with information about railroads, minerals and mining, geology and history, most of which focus on Virginia and West Virginia, but also cover other states and even the world.

The collection consists of 341 sketchbooks, manuscripts, and annotated printed maps, the originals of which reside in the Library of Congress’ Geography and Map Division.

A good many of these are available online

Making Eerie Trees

HorrorTerrainTerrain Outdoor

The Palantir website has a photo tutorial on making eerie trees. The intent is to help you build your own Fangorn forest, but you could just as easily build the creepy forest from Sleepy Hollow, or any other scary forest that you need for your horror miniatures games.

Free Target Arnhem Game

Rules WWIIWorld War II

Multiman Publishing—the current producers of Squad Leader, among others—offers a free game called Target: Arnhem:

Target: Arnhem is an introductory level game on the Market Garden campaign. Two pages of rules, approximately 56 units, and a very portable 11"x17” map make Target: Arnhem the kind of game you can carry around and get your friends to try.

We produced Target: Arnhem with the intent of giving the game away at conventions and tournaments. There was a lot of demand for copies of the game from people who couldn’t attend a convention. We have decided to put the game up for ordering on our website. The game is free. Yup, die-cut counters and all. The only cost to you is the postage for the smallest weight entry we can put in our shipping database.

About the Miniature Wargaming Hobby

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.

The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.

Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

For pictures, visit the gallery.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
