The previously commercially published Wildfire rules now are available as a free download. The author’s description:
Version 1.1 of the Wildfire rules system, a generic ruleset for 15mm science fiction skirmishes (the rules are easily adapted for other scales). Employing a simple and intuitive yet tactical counters-based system with full rules for infantry and vehicles, Wildfire includes a complete design system to let you create forces from your imagination or based on a film or book. An optional background, the Second Sphere, is also included. One hundred and five pages of science fiction action!
Also available, Wildfire Overkill:
Wildfire Overkill, the first expansion to the Wildfire science fiction miniatures skirmish game! At 50 pages and available in book and pdf form, Overkill includes a small number of rules clarifications from the main rulebook based on player feedback, followed by a whole host of optional rules to enrich your games including: playing in 25mm, new weapon types, stealth and camouflage, tracking devices, troop dispositions and leaders, targeting priorities and more! Finally, six army lists are provided detailing example troops, vehicles and weapons from your favorite science fiction fims and books for easy ‘pick up and play’ gaming. Wildfire Overkill takes science fiction skirmish gaming to the next level - why not come along for the ride?

Unbreakable is a set of free wargames rules for
a game of futuristic ground combat for 2 players. Each player assembles a platoon of crawlers, walkers, and powered armor squads and equips them with nukes, stasis rays, lasers, and more. Then the platoons meet in combat where they unleash terrible powers of overwhelming destruction. Fortunately, no one gets hurt. Thanks to amazing leaps in materials technology, the battlefield of the future will no longer be a dangerous place (for the combatants).

Here’s a selection of downloadable flags for the Russian Civil War. That’s a period I’ve always wanted to paint and game. I can’t imagine a more colorful selection of armies and characters.

Miniature Wargaming is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes r ole p laying and board games. Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. There also is a growing interest in toy soldiers and military models, such as the 1/32 and 1/35 scale plastic soldiers from Conte, and Marx.
The most popular miniature wargames are fantasy and science fiction based, such as Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine and The Lord of the Rings. World War II games such as Flames of War and Axis and Allies are new favorites. Other favorite historical periods include Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and ancients, such as Romans or Greeks. Other gamers enjoy miniature naval wargames, recreating battles like Trafalgar, Jutland and the Coral Sea.
Hobbyists research historical periods and paint their tiny soldiers in accurate uniforms. Others develop "historically realistic" rules sets or build scale battlefield terrain using model railroad techniques.

Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures. Wizards of the Coast produces several lines of pre-painted miniatures games, such as the Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures games, and a historical game with pre-painted miniatures: The new Axis and Allies game. Wizkids produces a fantasy collectable miniatures game, such as the Mage Knight and Heroclick fantasy games, the science fiction games MechWarrior and Rocketmen, as well as the quasi-historical Pirates of the Spanish Main.
