Product Description In 1521, Suleiman the Magnificent, Muslim ruler of the Ottoman Empire, dispatched an invasion fleet to the Christian island of Rhodes. This would prove to be the opening shot in an epic clash between rival empires and faiths for control of the Mediterranean and the center of the world. In Empires of the Sea, acclaimed historian Roger Crowley has written a thrilling account of this brutal decades-long battle between Christendom and Islam for the soul of Europe, a fast-paced tale of spiraling intensity that ranges from Istanbul to the Gates of Gibraltar. Crowley conjures up a wild cast of pirates, crusaders, and religious warriors struggling for supremacy and survival in a tale of slavery and galley warfare, desperate bravery and utter brutality. Empires of the Sea is a story of extraordinary color and incident, and provides a crucial context for our own clash of civilizations.

Can't Recommend It Too Highly - If You Like History March 11, 2010 James Barton Phelps (Menlo Park, CA United States) This is a readable, compelling and absolutely delightful history about the struggle between Islam and Christendom for control of the Mediterranean from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 until the Battle of Lepanto 118 years later (1571). Would that all history books were as pleasant a read as this one.
You'll need a map (the ones in the book aren't helpful) but apart from that all you need to do is settle back and enjoy the way Crowley tells the story. The siege of Rhodes, the siege of Malta and the Battle of Lepanto are all events most of have heard about; and here Mr. Crowley brings them to the page in graphic style. You will be impressed with the religiosity of each side, the efficiency of the Turks, the disunity of the Christian powers, with the heroes on each side. In a way the story is a modern Iliad and I was fascinated with it. Can't recommend it too highly if you like history
Excellent March 4, 2010 Fred W. Walz Although this wouldn't be a book you would use to write a history paper, its an excellent read.
Crowley isn't a boring historian, he engages you throughout the whole entire book and the chapters aren't too short and aren't too long, they're the perfect length where you don't feel you're reading about a subject for too long.
Read his previous book 1453, also an excellent read.
My only small problem with his books is he does not use footnotes, but does list a bibliography and where he gets the author of his primary source quotes, which there a lot.
Thrilling February 1, 2010 Gary Glick (Miami, Florida) I listened to the audio version of Empires of the Sea. Although I am a dedicated history buff, I knew little about the events of the 16th century. The story was gripping. I listened to it in my car, and found myself sitting there long after I had shut the engine, to complete the chapter. The accounts of the battles were particularly enjoyable. The details created vivid images and the narration was emotional and descriptive. Many sections I listed to twice. Overall, it was a thrilling book and I learned much about an important period of history. I would highly recommend the CD version of this excellent book.
Magnificent December 4, 2009 Saxofrog (TX) I'm just an average joe looking for a good read -- no historian here -- so look to other reviewers for that critique.
Crowley has a wonderful story and tells it masterfully. I think he could turn a phone book into a great read. In fact, if he authors one, I'll buy it in hardback and sleep with it under my pillow. This one might be better than 1453. If you haven't read either, buy them both, read 1453 first, and then decide yourself. If I ever get to make another trip to Europe, I'm going to stop at Malta and Rhodes, all while carrying this book with me.
I haven't seen many other books on Amazon with such overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Vivid, Gripping, Fascinating November 9, 2009 Amit Rahalkar (Edison, NJ United States) I downloaded the book (as an audio book) last month and thoroughly enjoyed the rivetting narrative of the author and gripping reading by the narrator.
I subsequently downloaded the 'Enemy at the Gates' and the content, the narration and the reading are utterly lackluster compared to this book's.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next book from Roger Crowley and I hope John Lee reads it for the audio format
