Product Description
In June of 1876, on a hill above a winding river called "the Little Bighorn," George Armstrong Custer and all 210 men under his direct command were annihilated by nearly 2,000 Sioux and Cheyenne. This devastating loss caused an uproar, and public figures pointed fingers in order to avoid responsibility. Custer, who was conveniently dead, took the brunt of the blame.

The truth, however, was far more complex. A TERRIBLE GLORY is the first book to relate the entire story of this endlessly fascinating battle, and the first to call upon all the vital new forensic research of the past quarter century. It is also the first book to bring to light the details of the army cover-up--and unravel one of the greatest mysteries in US military history.

5 out of 5 stars Custer - A Terrible Glory   January 13, 2010
Lael Prock (Mercer Island, Washington)
I don't read a lot of books about the American West but was drawn to this by the large number of good reviews. I knew there were lots of books about Custer and the Little Big Horn battle and I really wanted to read just one. I think I picked the one. It was an outstanding book, a great read that was hard to put down. Since Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn was the most well known incidents of the American West there is so much speculation and out right falsehoods about this subject that it is hard to know what to believe. This book seems to get the subject perfectly. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Custer or the American West in general.

4 out of 5 stars Custer's Last Stand   November 14, 2009

I wanted to research the "true" story of the demise of Custer and found the book to be extremely detailed and even-handed. The writer was recognized as one of our best Western authors, with good reason I would say.

5 out of 5 stars Good read, well researched   October 9, 2009

I visited the Little Bighorn National Memorial Battlefield in August 09 and this book was very helpful in understanding what happened there as well as preamble to the battle. It is obvious that the author spent some time at the site and this helped in his presentation.

5 out of 5 stars As it happened   October 6, 2009

This book comes as close to describing the events of that fateful day as well as ever can be expected. It covers the life of Custer and relevent events prior to the battle to give a great over view and insight into his personality. This combined with the actions of many of his peers who ultimately played a role in the final battle gives one a better judgement of the actions of that day. Prior to reading this book I was somewhat ambivalent toward his "guilt" in the debacle; after reading this, I see that like most things it's not so black and white. I was left with a greater respect for him and the men who died so tragicaly on last stand hill.
